Recommended Application Procedure for EarthBind100™ Dust Suppression

EarthBind100™ is sold and shipped in concentrate and diluted with water prior to application. Normally for typical unpaved municipal, county, or state roads, Earthbind™ is diluted to make a 4:1 solution (20%) or a 6:1 solution (14%).


The amount of EarthBind100™ concentrate that is required for
effective dust suppression on an unpaved road varies on the:


  • Type of road aggregate material
  • Climatic conditions
  • Type, number, and velocity of vehicles
  • Road grade
  • Road surface conditions

For best results, Earthbind™ is best applied with a pressurized spray bar, but can also be applied with a water truck or a gravity feed drop bar. The thickness of the application and depth of its penetration into the soil can be controlled by varying the concentration levels and the total volume of product and water used. It is generally applied at a rate of 0.10 to 0.15 gallons of concentrate per square yard of road surface. For optimum results roads treated with Earthbind™ should have a minimum grade of 3% from the center of the road to the shoulder. Thus, for an 18 foot wide road the sides of the road should be at least 3 inches lower than the center.

When applying an initial application of Earthbind™, the product concentrate is diluted with water to make a 4:1 or 6:1 solution and applied at a rate of 0.10 gal/sq. yd. For a normal 18 foot wide road this would equate to an application rate of 0.20 gallons of concentrate per linear foot of road (0.2gal/ft). This is best applied in a minimum of two passes allowing enough time between each pass to allow the product to thoroughly soak in before the next pass is applied. This process maximizes penetration and eliminates wasteful runoff between passes.

For optimum penetration, it is best applied as soon as possible after grading and compaction. For applications over roads that have been previously treated with magnesium chloride, grading and compaction is imperative. After grading, compaction by mechanical means prior to application, or normal traffic after application, will enhance the lasting properties of Earthbind100™. Loose stones or aggregate on the roadway will hasten the breakdown of the surface bond.

Where wash boarding and potholes are a problem, the heavier initial application rate of 0.15 gal/sq.yd (0.30 gal/ln.ft.) of concentrate is recommended.For successive annual applications the lower rate of 0.075 gal/sq.yd (0.15 gal/ft) is usually adequate. Subsequent applications will cause product build up and after a period of time, due to the accumulative residual of product, the application can be suspended or reduced to an “as needed basis”.

Earthbind100™ is water resistant once fully cured. Depending on weather and soil conditions, it is fully cured in 12 to 24 hours after application. It should not be applied when a “measurable rainfall event” is expected within 24 hours after application.

Earthbind100™ can be driven on immediately after application but in order to eliminate any accumulation on vehicles from tire spray it is best to wait until all the product has been absorbed into the roadway, usually a maximum of 20 minutes. The product can be easily washed off vehicles with water prior to curing, and with any petroleum based solvent after curing. After fully cured Earthbind100™ will reduce or total eliminate the muddy road surfaces in rainy or snowy conditions that are typically associated with roads treated with other dust suppressants.

The application of Earthbind™ can result in reduced roadway maintenance costs to local governments. As the fine dust particles will be permanently bonded less of the roads’ surface material will leave the roadway or be blown away with normal use. Thus, the need to continually add fresh road mix and or aggregate to the road surface will be greatly reduced.

The water resistant and lasting properties of Earthbind™ will reduce water penetration into the roadway. Road deterioration from mud, wash boarding, and potholes will be reduced as will the need for frequent road grading, resulting in cost savings in man hours, road material and fuel.
Earthbind100™ is appropriate for use on soils, roads, parking lots, mining areas and other environments where dust needs to be controlled. It can also be used as a soil compacting agent.
